Jonathan has been dancing since age five. He watched Dance Fever on Saturday Nights, then showed his parents what he learned, improvising from that earliest time. Between ages seven and fifteen, he earned two black belts in different forms of karate, the youngest black belt in the history of his dojo.
Jonathan comes from a musical family. His mother was a music teacher, his father a guitar and banjo player, and his uncles and grandfather working musicians in the 30s, 40s and 50s. By age 5 he was taught to play piano and sing, leading to performances with the Children‚s Chorus at the Metropolitan Opera in the mid 1980s until his voice changed. During this period he found a trombone left by one of his father's friends who played in the family Dixieland Jazz Band. He picked it up and hasn't put it down since! Jonathan attended Teaneck High School in New Jersey. He was an athlete, specialized in Russian language and literature, and performed in all of the school musicals, as well as local parties and events. He then graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music with a degree in Jazz Studies, and from Oberlin College with a degree in Biochemistry. After Oberlin he freelanced in New York City, developing his skills and joining Local 802 and SAG.
In 2003 he appeared in Showtime in Harl
em, leading to an appearance on Steve Harvey‚s Big Time. Jonathan's performance there is the most downloaded clip in the entirety of the WB Network over the last twelve months.
